For many cooperatives, understanding tax rules can mean the difference between a smooth transaction and a costly compliance problem.
To help cooperative leaders navigate these requirements, a Province-wide Tax Education Forum was held today at the Grand Social Hall of Casa Real de Iloilo, bringing tax information and expert guidance closer to cooperatives across the province.
Organized by the Philippine Chamber of Cooperatives Inc. (Coop Chamber) in partnership with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Iloilo Provincial Cooperatives Development Office (PCDO) and the Iloilo Provincial Employees and Community Multi-purpose Cooperative (IPECMPC), the forum focused on practical tax education and the concerns faced by cooperative leaders in complying with government requirements.
The BIR’s Legal Office and Revenue District Office 74 led the tax education session, giving participants an opportunity to clarify rules and raise concerns directly with tax authorities.
The forum also featured an open discussion with cooperative leaders, followed by the presentation of policy recommendations and proposed ways forward through the Coop Chamber.
The activity is particularly relevant as cooperatives continue to deal with evolving tax and reportorial requirements. In 2025, the BIR clarified requirements involving the submission of members’ Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs) in applications for a cooperative’s Certificate of Tax Exemption, while providing measures to address difficulties in securing members’ TINs.
For cooperative members, better tax knowledge can translate into fewer compliance errors, more informed financial decisions, and greater confidence in dealing with government agencies.
Under existing BIR rules, duly registered cooperatives that transact exclusively with members may qualify for various tax exemptions, subject to applicable requirements and regulations.
Ultimately, the forum sought to turn tax education into something more practical for those who run and depend on cooperatives: clearer rules, better compliance and stronger cooperatives capable of serving their members more effectively.
