IPHO COMPLETES 5 DAY DROWNING PREVENTION PROGRAM IN OTON

A five-day drowning prevention program of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office has equipped children and teenagers in Oton with practical water safety skills aimed at reducing one of the most preventable causes of injury and death in communities.

Under IPHO’s Violence and Injury Prevention Program (VIPP), the “Learn and Survive” initiative trained participants aged 5 to 18 at Savannah Trails in Oton, in partnership with the municipal government of Oton.

Designed as a hands on intervention, the training focused on helping young participants develop basic survival techniques and safety awareness in and around water, skills the PHO said can save lives, especially in our province with many coastal and riverside communities.

For participating families, the program offers more than swimming lessons. It gives children the confidence to respond during emergencies and teaches them how to avoid dangerous situations.

IPHO said that providing hands-on training aims to decrease the incidence of drowning accidents through proactive education and skill-building within local communities.
